What's in a Name?
When it comes to The international Bujutsu University the name was selected very carefully, in the main the group use the West Translation in order to promote the group. So why this name?
International:
To promote the groups core areas and to promote world-wide presence is giving our members the opportunity travel and train.
Bujutsu:
Origins of well-known martial arts (Bujutsu in Japanese, We Shu in Chinese) schools / styles / systems today can be traced to the Shaolin Temple (AD 504) in China, where Zen Buddhism and the martial art system of Shaolin Kung Fu or Temple boxing started.
Zen Buddhism was transmitted from the Shaolin Temple,China, to Japan in the Kamakura period (1185-1333), which was also the period of non-armed Bujutsu transmission to Japan. However non-armed Bujutsu was not so important during Samurai period (1185 - 1868) because all Samurais used Katana (swords). During this long period the main Bujutsu in was Ken-Jutsu (art of Sword). This tradition still continues in Japan and about 20% of Bujutsu/Budo people practice Ken-Jutsu and/or Kendo (a modern sport). Very few people in the west train in this fighting art.
When Samurai domination finished (1868) and Meiji Emperor and his government prohibited the carrying of swords, non-armed Bujutsu & Budo like Jujitsu, Aiki Jutsu, Judo and Karate flowered. But unfortunately many Ju jutsu schools had to close because of Judo. Then after the World II, new Budo such as Aikido and Shorinji-Kempo (Japanese Shalom Kung Fu) became very popular.
It has taken almost 1000 years for non-armed Bujutsu to be recognised widely through Japan and during last 40 years Bujutsu/Budo has become very popular not only in Japan, but all over the World.
University:
Perhaps the best why to explain this part of the name can be taken directly from the dictionary definition:
Educational institution designed for instruction or examination or both of students in all or many of the more important branches of advanced learning conferring degrees in various faculties, and often embodying collages and similar institutions.
